Hāpara Hall Pass continues to evolve to make student movement easier to manage across schools. This month’s updates give schools more flexibility with staff roles, one-way passes and multi-teacher classes, helping ensure students get where they need to go with the right visibility and support.

Prevent encounters of the third kind, or any kind for that matter

Help prevent bullying or student meetups in the halls with encounter prevention. Tech admins can set up 1:1 pairs of students who are not allowed in the hallways at the same time. If this is enabled, students will receive a message that they are unable to create a pass. Teachers receive a warning when creating passes for students included in encounter prevention. Please note that if the teacher override setting is enabled, teachers can override this. If it is not enabled, they will not be able to create the pass.

You’ve got…notifications

Since you probably won’t be sitting behind your desk the whole class period waiting for hall pass requests from students, we’ve added some handy notifications. If teachers enable notifications on their devices, they’ll now get notifications when a student requests a pass, a pass is overdue (especially helpful when you might need to summon the search party), or a pass has been approved. Students will receive notifications when their pass requests are approved.

Extending pass times

Sometimes students need more than five minutes to go to the bathroom, especially if it’s on the other side of the school. Teachers can extend pass times on a case-by-case basis to meet the needs of the moment. Tech admins need to enable this feature in their Hāpara Admin Console.

New roles added: Hall monitor and destination staff

We’ve added two new roles to Hāpara Hall Pass to ensure that all staff have the right level of access at the right time to manage student movement across campus.

  • Hall monitor role: Anyone who is responsible for monitoring the hallways, such as security staff, SROs and building administrators. This makes it easier for hall monitors to identify who is supposed to be in the hallway and who isn’t.
  • Destination staff: This could be people such as the school nurse, front office staff or counselor. This is helpful for staff that need to issue or approve passes but may not have students assigned to them specifically.

If you are a technical administrator, you can learn more about how to configure roles and permissions here.

One-way passes

In the Hāpara Admin Console, you can now configure one-way passes. One-way passes can be used when the teacher doesn’t expect the student to return. For example, if a student is going to the nurse or their parent is there to pick them up early for an appointment, they need a pass to meet them in the front office. Another example would be when students arrive late to school and the front office staff need to issue them a one-way late pass to class.

Simplified student flow for multi-teacher classes

When requesting a pass, students will now select the class that they are currently in instead of the teacher’s name. In Hāpara Student Dashboard, students will see their classes, along with a list of the teachers attached to each class. The request will be sent to all teachers affiliated with the class. For example, this might be helpful in classrooms that have co-teachers or band classes where you might have multiple instructors at the same time.
