Discover why Hāpara and Microsoft are the perfect fit for your classrooms.

Finding the right digital tools for your district that offer value and easy management can feel like a continuous challenge. You need something that simplifies life for teachers, works with your existing systems and is, most importantly, focused on helping students learn.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce Hāpara Highlights for Microsoft Edge. We recently sat down with longtime Hāpara user Kyle Calderwood to talk about what this launch means for Microsoft schools. Kyle is a Technology Coordinator at Tabernacle Township School District in New Jersey. His districts have partnered with Hāpara for over 11 years, and Kyle offers a unique perspective on what makes a tool truly effective.

Why digital classroom management matters in the first place

In any digital classroom, keeping learners engaged and on track is a top priority. Without the right tools, it’s easy for learners to get lost on the internet or off-task in documents. A good classroom management solution gives teachers the visibility they need to guide learning and create a safe online space.

Kyle knows this challenge well. When he first started looking for a solution, his district had no visibility into what learners were doing online. “We had no insight into being able to see the screens or Google Drive or anything like that,” he shared. “So we needed something to help us do that.”

When teachers can see what students are doing, they can offer timely help, redirect off-task behavior and find teachable moments to build digital citizenship skills.

Hāpara’s difference: Designed for educators, by educators

What has made Hāpara a staple in the schools Kyle has supported for over a decade? According to Kyle, it comes down to a few areas that set it apart from other solutions.

Reducing cognitive load for teachers and students

One of the biggest hurdles in educational technology is “cognitive load,” the mental effort required to use a tool. A clunky, confusing platform can frustrate teachers and eat into precious instruction time.

“One of the major pieces of feedback I got was how easy it is to navigate,” Kyle explained. “The UI (user interface) is clean. It’s easy to find what they’re looking for so they’re not lost or frustrated about losing instruction time.”

He also noted that even when updates roll out in Hāpara, they don’t disrupt a teacher’s workflow.

He connected this directly to a core principle from his instructional technology studies: cognitive load theory. “If you’re looking for something and you’re frustrated because you’re not finding what you need, your brain shuts down and you’re done,” he said. “That’s why UI is so important.”

Lindsay noted that this extends to learners, too. With features like Guided Browsing, teachers can create a curated list of websites for a lesson. This prevents students from feeling overwhelmed by the entire internet and helps them focus on the class activity, reducing their own cognitive load.

Easy setup and minimal training

As a technology leader, you know a tool is only successful if your staff actually uses it. Complicated setups and lengthy training sessions are huge barriers. Hāpara is built for a simple, straightforward rollout.

“On my side, it’s really simple to set up,” Kyle confirmed.

For teachers, it’s a quick learning curve. Kyle typically runs a one-to-two-hour training session for new staff at the start of the year, and they’re ready to go. The platform is so intuitive that teachers often turn to each other for tips.

“They’ll go to their neighbor and say, ‘Hey, how do I do this in Hāpara?’ And they’re working together.”

Microsoft schools: What you can expect

Seamless transition to Hāpara browser monitoring for schools

Kyle is experienced in both Google and Microsoft. He is part of the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert program, a Skype Master Teacher and a Minecraft Education Ambassador

With that Microsoft experience, Kyle assures schools that transitioning to Hāpara’s browser monitoring tool will be a seamless experience.

He says, “I think especially for people in my position, the setup is easy. The administrative part of it is so easy. It is easy to deploy. For teachers, it’s going to be great to have it set up in your classroom. So I don’t think there’s any pitfalls. And again, we’ve been using the product for so long that I’ve never had a complaint or any issues. So I think they’ll be able to seamlessly transition into using this product.”

He also emphasizes that whether you are a Google district or a Microsoft district you’re still getting “a great product.”

Integration with Microsoft IDs and Microsoft Edge

If your district uses Microsoft IDs, you get the same great Hāpara Highlights experience, seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Edge.

Our Product Manager, Megan Jakubec, explained the motivation behind expanding to Microsoft.

“We get a lot of requests to offer what we do in Google in the Microsoft environment,” she said. “People love our tools. We have a lot of users who really enjoy how we approach classroom management with pedagogy in mind. finally decided to take the leap and make this available in Microsoft for our users.”

She continued, “We really want to continue to build digital citizenship. We want our students to be safe online. We want them to be engaged. We want to continue having all those great teachable moments that are happening in Hāpara Highlights. So by doing this and making our product available in Edge, we are just extending how many people we can reach, how many students we can help. So that’s really the goal here, and we know that there’s a lot of excitement about it, which makes us very excited.”

Favorite Hāpara Highlights features for Microsoft Edge

For those new to Hāpara, here’s a look at what Hāpara Highlights can do for your educators and learners.

See all browser activity at once

Hāpara Highlights gives teachers a real-time view of their learners’ browser tabs across the class. They can quickly see who is on task and who might need a gentle nudge.

Guide student browsing

Hāpara Highlights allows teachers to guide learners’ browsing during class time. With Focus Sessions, teachers can limit students to a pre-approved list of websites. Filter Sessions allow broader access while blocking specific distracting websites. Setting up a session takes just a few seconds.

Provide immediate learning support

Teachers can open or close tabs on a student’s device, send announcements and share links directly to their screens. This allows for quiet, discreet support without disrupting the whole class.

Create differentiated groups

Good teaching means differentiating instruction to support all learners’ needs. Hāpara Highlights offers a powerful student groups feature. Teachers can easily create groups to share website links with groups, monitor group progress or send an announcement to a group.

Empower your educators and engage your learners

After seeing a demo of Hāpara Highlights for Microsoft, Kyle was confident in the experience. “For teachers, you’re not going to notice a huge difference, whether you’re using Edge or Chrome.”

The goal of any edtech tool should be to enhance learning, not complicate it. By bringing Hāpara Highlights to Microsoft Edge, we are extending our commitment to creating safe and engaged digital learning environments. It’s about giving educators the tools they need to feel confident and giving learners the structure they need to thrive.
