Changes to Google Drive folders

Last year, Google announced a feature to create pointers to files or folders via shortcuts in Google Drive, along with an upcoming change that limits how files can be placed in Google Drive.

These Google changes required Hāpara to update the way that student subject folders are provisioned, so when you load data for the school new year:

  1. Student subject folders will be linked into students’ Google Drives via shortcuts. There is no change in the way students or teachers use their subject folders, and these folders remain accessible to teachers via existing methods. The main update is that they will appear as folder shortcuts in student’s Google Drives.
  2. Hāpara will now create a new subject folder for each class, even if they have the same subject folder name. This means students will have a unique folder, or a unique set of folders for each class they belong to. Prior to this shortcut change, subject folders could be re-used or shared across multiple classes if they had the same subject folder name.
  3. Hāpara will now include the class name when creating subject folders if the subject folder name is configured to be the course or subject name. This will allow students to easily identify the class that each folder belongs to.
Overall, changes to shortcuts should make it easier to organize content and point students and teachers to the correct folder. We look forward to any feedback or suggestions that you may have.
